Project: Digital Convergence

harness what you’ve got, what others have and what you collectively need

_____________________

Ever been bogged down with your Station’s technology and wondered...

“Surely - someone else has found an easier way”?

Ever been snowed under with work and pondered...

“How can I keep my Station relevant with all this ‘New Media’ stuff”?

Ever spent some of your Stations hard earned time and money on a system thinking...

“Gee, I hope this works”?

Over the past five years, I’ve met dozens of Community Radio Station Managers, Staff and hard working Volunteers who have aired these thoughts.

As traditional media continues to transition into the digital age, more of our colleagues will begin to have similar thoughts. This project is an opportunity to answer these and many other questions.

Overview

The project aims to establish collaborations within the community radio sector to identify digitalCONVERGENCE options and resources for station program production, digital support material (including text and graphics) and music catalogue information for output through new digital delivery platforms (including online playout, mobile devices and digital radio).

The phrase ‘DIGITAL CONVERGENCE’ can be interpreted to highlight two core opportunities for project participants.

1. The opportunity to converge your station’s information technology (IT) and information systems (IS) knowledge and resources with other stations, to develop mutually beneficial solutions to meet digital and New Media challenges.

2. The opportunity to identify ‘best practice’ mechanisms for stations to harness and converge traditional broadcasting and information systems with digital and new media platforms.

Intended Outcomes

- To act as a ‘lightning rod’; maximising the collective clout of sector stations to generate digital information management and content solutions for stations.

- The Identification of practical digital service options for the sector, by collecting important information for the sector from stakeholders, and

- (Where immediate capacity is identified), create digital projects to facilitate the delivery of resources to the sector: Stakeholders will be connected to develop a resource further.

- (Where immediate capacity is identified), broker project timelines for specific collaborative projects to be implemented by stakeholders.

- (Where scope to develop a resource is identified) digital project models will be established for the sector to utilize. Models will include practical and cost effective development options, recommendations from third party stakeholders (programmers, third party industry representatives) and development/ rollout recommendations.

How do we start?

Please click the link below to register as a project participant. The more the merrier, so encourage your colleagues across station departments to register to provide input too! We will facilitate a number of online discussion boards to ‘nut out’ what digital and new media resources you’ve got at your Station and what resources you’d love to have. We can then identify collaboration opportunities between you and other community radio stations and stakeholders.

So…. click below and get converged!
